Don’t let your exclusivity agreement with another stock interfere with uploading images or video footage to Shutterstock. Shutterstock offers a special “Opt Out” option that allows authors to upload images and clips whenever and however they prefer.
Using the “Opt Out” option enables Shutterstock authors to meet their obligations regarding exclusive sales of the image or video through other stock sites.
It’s very simple: uploaded exclusive images and videos are held back from publication on Shutterstock until the exclusivity contract for those works on other stock sites expires. As soon as it expires, the held works start appearing for sale on Shutterstock immediately. This way, the author doesn’t miss a single day of sales for these works.
So, even if an author is bound by an exclusivity contract on another site, by using the mentioned Shutterstock option, they can register on Shutterstock. After creating an account and getting it approved, the author just needs to disable sales on the stock site using the special option. It’s very simple, just as easy as pressing a button.
Here’s how this process works:
1. Log into your account (you’ll reach your personal page);
2. Select “Your Account”, then from the dropdown menu “Resources”;
3. Scroll down to the section under “Minimum Payout”;
4. Click “Opt Out” next to all items, such as Shutterstock, Partners, Footage Sales, etc.
5. Click “Change Account Information”.
That’s it! While sales of images and videos are disabled through this option, the author can upload content for review only. All agreed images and videos will be unavailable for buyers until the author activates sales using this option.
Once your exclusivity contract expires, you can simply log into your account menu and switch all items to “Opt In” to immediately start selling your works on Shutterstock! Since these works in your portfolio are already approved, there’s no need to wait for uploads, attribution, or review. Just switch the options, and your images and videos will be available for immediate download.
And as a reminder, Shutterstock has never required exclusivity from its authors, so feel free to maximize your profit using any available method.
